(1) Tipperu, or bull-roarer, from New Guinea. With this instrument, weird noises are made during the ceremonies of imitation. The candidates think the noises are made by demons, but when the new Guinea man has taken his third-degree he is given one and told the truth, but also informed that death will be the penalty if he tells this fact to any below the third degree.
(2) a dancing-belt given to a man on taking his third degree in New Guinea. Note the center of each figure, then being depicted is the god of imitation.
