{Reply in Dec. Theos.}
Recd. Allahabad 1881-2.
Editor's Note [This is in A. O. Hume's writing. — Ed.]— The ring of doubt in the sentence "If the Theosophist were also an evolutionist," forces us to become painfully aware of the fact that Mr. G. Massey is no reader of the Theosophist — if he has ever seen it. Otherwise he could not have been ignorant of the fact that the two-thirds of the members of the Theosophical Society are "evolutionists," and that their Journal is pre-eminently so.
You do not seize the meaning at all. Ask Mr. Sinnett to do this for you; he'll see what the man means — and answer him. He himself volunteered last night for "something more difficult" — not two and two as he just said. Let him then — who acquitted himself so neatly of one thing do this one likewise and so oblige his
"illustrious" friend
